Hybrid Parrots

Dear Parrots magazine,

Hybrid Parrots

There has been a lot of controversy about hybrid parrots. I have a Blue and Gold and a Green Wing that have been together for eight years and are devoted to each other. This all came about by accident as a friend of mine could not look after her Blue and Gold because of health issues, and I was the obvious person to look after her bird on a temporary basis. But they bonded immediately and I did not have the heart to stop them from mating after about two years together, as clearly they wanted to bring up a baby.

Cognitive initiative

Dear Parrots magazine,

Cognitive initiative

I love reading about research into parrot behaviour. I want to thank Leslie Moran for bringing the research into the cognitive abilities of parrots, to our attention. It has inspired me to consider building a multi-coloured ring-stacking toy for my parrot. She is already adept at stacking rings but could do with some focus on matching the rings to the pole colour.

Lesson Learnt

Dear Parrots magazine,

Lesson Learnt

I have a Senegal parrot that was bought as a chick and we’ve had him for just over nine years. I have read warnings about windows and doors being left open when warmer weather comes, but I still left a small window open and he had the freedom of our lounge. It was when I thought he was very quiet that my heart missed a beat and I went rushing into the lounge. He was gone. I nearly died.

The Importance of Food

Dear Parrots magazine,

The Importance of Food

I was intrigued when I read Sally Blanchard’s article in the January issue about the importance of food. I have always believed in giving as wide a variety as possible of natural foods and cannot get my head around complete pelleted diets.

The Most Wonderful Gift

Dear Parrots magazine,

The Most Wonderful Gift

Recently I read an article in a local newspaper, about how parents have again given bunnies as gifts to children as Easter presents. The article went on to say what an inappropriate gift an animal was for Easter. A similar article is written each year around Christmas about the gift of puppies and kittens. Ok, I get it, animals as gifts can end up as unwanted and neglected pets.

Proper nutrition is essential

Dear Parrots magazine,

Proper nutrition is essential

I really enjoyed Tony Silva’s two part series on avian nutrition. It was heartening to learn that we agree on a number of important points. Such as, there must be many items in a wild parrot’s diet that cannot be observed and documented by researchers in the field, that pellets alone do not make up a complete avian diet, likewise, seeds fed alone must not be the only food source, the value of feeding organic foods and that different parrot species have specific micronutrient nutritional needs.
