Dear Parrots magazine,

No more clipping

I read an article by Stephen Lavoie about wing clipping. I too have stopped clipping my bird’s wings, but for a totally different reason. I own a 28 year old Moluccan Cockatoo. His name is Max, and he is a gentle teddy bear. Usually, it takes two people to clip a parrot’s wings, one person has to hold the parrot, while one person clips the wings. He never struggled when I clipped his wings, so I never needed anyone to help me.

Great seeds!

Why do we hear so much about seed not being nutritious for our birds. I am not a biologist nor a healthcare expert, but if seeds are so bad and lacking good nutritious, why is it that when planted, they germinate and grow into strong and healthy plants.

Better environments

It’s great that EB Cravens is pointing the way towards more enlightened methods of housing our feathered friends (May 2020). Large aviaries with natural enrichment should be the norm, but as Robert McKenzie points out, too many birds still languish in miserable conditions, which prevent them from expressing normal behaviour like flying and foraging.

I am heartbroken, and hope you can publish this letter. Would be nice if you can write something about tumours in Parrots magazine and how parrot owners deal with the death of their beloved pets. Many don’t understand the heartbreak and sorrow of losing a parrot or any pet.

More breeding please

I have been getting your magazine for several years, as have two Sulphur-crested Cockatoos as pet birds, but would now like to breed some parakeets. While the articles in Parrots magazine have been so helpful to me, can we have more information on breeding parrots and parakeets.

Not for the inexperienced

I have just seen an ad selling un-weaned parrots and am horrified. It also stated that they artificially incubate eggs and hand-rear. These are just the wrong things to do that will damage the life of a parrot.

  1. Letters: Foraging is good!
  2. Letters: Tape hazards
  3. Letters: Clean cages
  4. Letters: No cheap birds!
