Letters: More on free flying please?

Dear Parrots magazine,

More on free flying please?

I really enjoyed reading Jacquie's story about her free-flying birds.  I particularly appreciated her candor in reporting the ups and downs (pun intended) of her birds' free-flying adventures.  That takes courage, as I've found the parrot community can be well meaning but judgemental.

Letters: Harnesses

Dear Parrots magazine,

Harnesses

I have read in the avian press about parrot harnesses and whether or not they should be used. With much hot weather during this summer, I really wanted to take my Amazon outside and on walks with me so have taken an interest in harnesses, as I am totally opposed to wing clipping! But I thought they are not the ideal thing to use on a feathered creature, so have been somewhat reluctant to buy one.

Letters: Ideal housing

Dear Parrots magazine,

Ideal housing

One of the first columns I go to is Eb Cravens 'Complete Psittacine', as I love his whole approach to keeping parrots. I have heard him speak at conventions and the way he promotes natural ways for his birds is brilliant.

Letters: Are cat balls safe?

Dear Parrots magazine,

Are cat balls safe?

I refer to Sandra and Ian's toy warning in the August issue and would ask that you do not buy cat balls for your parrot.  I have an African Grey called Chalkie and I bought some plastic balls with bells inside for cats from the Pound Shop.  She loved playing with them and chewing them.  As soon as she had chewed a hole big enough for the bell to fall out I had to take the bell away from her.  These too are made of tin.

Letters: Probiotics and lifespans

Dear Parrots magazine,

Probiotics and lifespans

I’m writing in response to EB Craven’s letter regarding non GMO avian specific probiotics in last Parrots ‘Letters’ (August 151). First, I want to thank EB for adding additional information regarding another non GMO avian specific probiotic available on the market.  In hindsight, my statement in my column should have read, “ Avi-Culture is the only non GMO avian specific probiotic on the market my research uncovered.”

Letters: Good diets

Dear Parrots magazine,

Good diets

I refer to a letter in the September issue (152) from Sheila Goldsworthy. I had rescued a seven year old male Senegal and fed him on Tidymix and Nutriberries from Northern Parrots. The Nutriberries are full of vitamins, but are expensive. He gets a veggie one with his food in the morning and then a cranberry one in the evening. He just loves them. He also gets fruit and vegetables and his favourites are sugar snaps, carrot, peas and sweetcorn.
