Letters: Night-time plucker cured

Dear Parrots magazine,

Night-time plucker cured

My lovely African Grey, much to my dismay, began plucking his feathers, but he always seemed to do it at night, when he was on his own. In the daytime he was always out of his cage all day, either on his play-gym or on his favourite swing, and I had never seen him pluck a single feather then. I took him to my vet, explaining that he had a good diet, was sprayed daily with lukewarm water, had company all day long, and had at least 8-hours sleep at night.

Letters: Poor bird park

Dear Parrots magazine,

Poor bird park

I would be interested to know if any of your readers have visited the Tropical Bird Garden at the Botanical Gardens in Funchal, Madeira?

Letters: The Rat Pack - no clipped wings

Dear Parrots magazine,

The Rat Pack - no clipped wings

I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed the Rat Pack article in the February 2012 issue, and how lovely it was to see a large collection of parrots that are all fully-flighted and able to fly at will.

Letters: Getting involved

Dear Parrots magazine,

Getting involved

I recently went to visit a garden centre some distance away from where I live as I wanted to look at the parrots that were being sold. I had heard that there were some problems there and I was not wrong - I don’t want to name this place for obvious reasons.

Letters: Birthday cake for parrots!

Dear Parrots magazine,

Birthday cake for parrots!

I made this special birthday cake last week for five parrots (two macaws, two Amazons and a caique), that I took in one year ago, to celebrate the anniversary of their coming to live with me. They had been found in a distressed state and had suffered badly, having been rescued from a house where their owner had been lying dead for a week.

Letters: Banish mice the natural way

Dear Parrots magazine,

Banish mice the natural way

If anyone is having a problem with mice in their aviaries, I would like to share a tip passed to me by a bird keeper friend of mine. When I told him I had a mouse problem, he explained to me that he always sprays peppermint oil around his aviaries, and underneath the nest-boxes, and this is very effective at keeping these unwanted rodents away.
