More conservation please!

Dear Parrots magazine,

More conservation please!

I have been a subscriber to Parrots magazine for a number of years now, and my keen interest is in conservation.  I have an Amazon and a Senegal Parrot which were both rescues and am growing increasingly concerned at the way these birds’ natural habitats are being destroyed due to human greed.  It is good that the magazine covers conservation and it is not just for parrots, but the whole of our wildlife and eco system.

Questionable legislation

Dear Parrots magazine,

Questionable legislation

Over the years I have read a lot about cage sizes and that our environmental authorities lay down minimum specifications that a bird kept in a cage must be able to outstretch its wings.

Avocado stones

Dear Parrots magazine,

Avocado stones

I have lost count of the number of times I have heard that avocado pears are lethal for parrots and can actually end up in the loss of a bird.

More information please?

Dear Parrots magazine,

More information please?

During my life, my father and grandfather have always kept birds, so I have been brought up with them and found the incredibly fascinating.  Most were kept as aviary birds, although when I was a child my parents brought in an Amazon parrot which stayed with the family until it died, about five years ago.

Is Legislation required?

Dear Parrots magazine,

Is Legislation required?

I remember when the Animal Welfare Act was being debated and discussed by our MPs and during that time an issue was raised as to whether or not rescue centres should be licenced.  Perhaps it was because I lost track of what was going on at that time, with the result that as far as I know rescue centres are not licenced.

Neutral rooms do work

Dear Parrots magazine,

Neutral rooms do work

Your article in the July issue about neutral rooms has worked a treat.  I have a Green-cheeked Conure and I wanted some company for him as he seemed somewhat forlorn on his own.  It was at that time that a friend of a friend, who bred Maroon-bellied Conures offered me one of his birds that was surplus to requirements and about three years old, which was a similar age to my own Conure.
