Dear Parrots magazine,
Baked apple recipe
I found this recipe the other day and my parrots: two Umbrella Cockatoos, one Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, a Mealy Amazon, a Blue-fronted Amazon and a Dusky Conure all loved it so I thought I would share it with other Parrots magazine readers!
Cut four eating apples in half, remove the cores and place on a baking tray lightly smeared with olive oil. Then mix in a bowl 2 tbsp of wheatgerm, 2 tbsp of low sugar dried fruits, 1 tsp of cinnamon, 2oz of chopped mixed nuts and fill the centres of the apples. Drizzle a little apple juice over the apples and bake for 30-40 mins at 180C or 350F.
One word of caution though, do not serve until the apples have had time to cool down and are just warm to the touch, however impatient the parrots become when they can smell the steaming apples coming out of the oven!
