Dear Parrots magazine,

Understanding your parrot

Isn’t it just fantastic when your parrot utters some words you understand and how good they are at talking, or should I say ‘mimicking’. Now that should stir up some interest for Parrots readers. Do parrots ‘talk’ or do they ‘mimic’?

But what is more important is to understand their other ways of communication - their body language. My Grey talks quite clearly and all of us, my friends included, can understand him. But what do their body movements mean and how can we understand them. My Bobby often bobs up and down for example and I haven’t a clue what he is trying to say. He also ‘flicks’ his head as though suffering from a deficiency in calcium, but I know that’s not the case as I have had him checked out with an avian vet.

While, I’m sure, we enjoy our birds very much, it would be even better if only we could understand the many other ways they communicate.
