Crazy for Conures, Living with a Kakariki, How to Encourage Play, The Wonders of the Wing

Issue 87 - April 2005

The Complete Psittacine with EB Cravens – Foods we grow for our birds – One of my consult questions recently enquired about foods that we grow for our parrots, so I thought it might be a good idea to share some of our ‘fresh and green food’ tips with Parrots magazine readers. Keep In mind that although April and I now live on a small farm, we did not always have access to organic garden plots to cultivate organic produce. I have grown greenery for my Psittacines in cities like San Francisco and in containers in a sunny room in the Rocky Mountains in winter. Crazy for Conures – a glimpse of those ‘wedge-tailed’ parakeets – EB Cravens had raised, fed and cared for 15 different conure species and found them all to be curious, mischievous, affectionate and wilful. He shares his experience of breeding and keeping these parrots with us. Living with a Kakariki - Kakarikis are usually kept as aviary birds, but Rachell Grant explains why that should not deter people from keeping this endearing, comical and lively – yet undemanding pet. How to encourage play - If you have spent your hard-earned money on toys for your parrot only to find that he ignores them, then help is at hand. Sonny Stollenmaier explains how to revive interest in long-forgotten playthings. The Wonders of the Wing – Sam Williams details the structure of a parrot’s wing and explains how this determines the way the bird flies. Parrots in Focus by Cyril Laubscher – The Roseate Cockatoo… is an incredibly beautiful cockatoo! A Roseate Cockatoo in perfect condition is always an attractive specimen and shows why this is such a popular cockatoo. The Worldwide Trade in Grey Parrots – Rosemary Low argues that the global trade in the unique and sensitive African Grey Parror has become an international scandal. Reintroduced Scarlet Macaws start breeding – David Waugh explains the research strategies covering breeding Scarlet Macaws that have been successfully reintroduced into Costa Rica. Household hazards and pet parrots – Lee-Anne Burgess outlines some of the dangers that can affect parrots in the home, and the daily considerations an unsuspecting owner should take.
