Fractures in a young African Grey
This month produced an interesting case in the shape of ‘Kale’, a 10 month old African Grey hen. She was presented with acute lameness of her right leg. The owner thought she had broken this limb and I could also feel an abnormality in her left leg. X-rays were taken, which revealed an old healed fracture in the left tibia (shin). It transpired that this leg had been repaired with a splint some months previously and had healed well. The problem now, was the right leg.
This showed a folding fracture, meaning that the tibia (shin bone) had bent in towards the bird’s body and forwards towards her head.
