Breeding and Companion Parrotlets - all the antics of a parrot, but in miniature by Jill Perry
Parrotlets, found in Mexico, Central America and South America, are the second smallest parrots in the world - the pygmy parrot from Australasia taking the No. 1 spot - and rather surprisingly, are most closely-related to Amazon parrots. But, Stefano Salles, originally from Rome, but now living in London, who has been breeding these delightful little birds for just over three years, isn’t in the least bit surprised, and says, “My tame pet Celestial Parrotlets display many of the antics of larger parrots, and are sometimes even as playful and as entertaining as my pet Caique!”
Parrotlets are particularly popular in the US, both as breeding birds and pets, but for some reason, they have never really taken off in quite the same way in the UK. But, Stefano, who has kept birds since he was a young boy, has become completely enchanted by these miniature parrots, with huge personalities, and says, “Parrotlets are more amusing than budgies, much quieter than lovebirds, can live for up to 20 years, and parent-reared chicks can be easily tamed, and become just as confiding as hand-reared birds.”
