This Summer I Re-evaluated My Feeding Regimen

Complete Psittacine by EB Cravens

It all began with Tutu and Buddy. Our 40-years-in captivity Yellow-fronted Amazon hen and her younger domestic raised mate, had been giving me signals about what they preferred to eat for several months, when I decided to take a serious look at how we had been feeding our psittacines, and perhaps make some basic changes in nutrition.

Re-evaluation of diet protocol is something I recommend to all captive bird owners. Once a year, or perhaps once every two or three years, aviculturists should take a pace back and look carefully at what they are providing their birds on a daily menu. It is important for birds that are growing older and have evolving likes and dislikes, plus, diets that are contrived as we all must do for our caged birds, have subtle deficiency problems which become graver the more years they are fed unchangingly.
