Issue 159 of Parrots magazine contained a news report of ‘Mystery Parrot Deaths’ relating to non-stick cookware, and an article by Rosemary Low on carbon monoxide poisoning. As we know, this is not a new subject, but one that is worth resurrecting to remind people of these dangers. The fact that birds are extra-susceptible to inhaled gases has been known for a very long time – hence the reference to the use of canaries in coal mines as detectors of carbon monoxide and methane gases, before these built up to levels sufficient to endanger human life.
