Healthy feathers

Spreads for web 1

by Sally Blanchard

Healthy feathers are essential to a parrot’s well-being and a great deal of their time and energy is spent maintaining them. In the wild, a parrot without properly groomed and maintained feathers, especially flight feathers, is unlikely to survive. This, of course, brings up major questions about feather destructive behaviour in captive and companion parrots.

1. Why would a bird, whose instincts determine that good feather condition is essential for survival, destroy such a critical part of their anatomy?

2. Another question is why do some parrots feather pick under certain conditions, while others don’t under the same conditions?

3. The most important question is how do we get them to stop?

No-one really knows the answers to these questions, but there are many possibilities that may be true.
