Techniques in Working with a Reticent or Aggressive Parrot

Spreads for web 2

by Sally Blanchard

Parrots are very empathic and easily pick up that we are uncomfortable or afraid of them.  One of the few absolute rules of parrot behaviour is that parrots are more comfortable with people who are comfortable with them.  They can become uncomfortable with us if we show fear when we are trying to handle them, which can cause confusion with the result that they may not want to be handled.  If they interpret what you are doing as being aggressive, they will not want you to handle them, and if a caregiver continues to force their parrots to interact physically, they may become aggressive and any trust in the relationship is lost.

There are some logistical concepts that can make working with a reticent, fearful or aggressive parrot much easier.  Most of all, patience is essential.
